Here's another card I made for a friend's niece's 1st birthday request. I have also entered this card in this weeks Global Design Project #26 - Sketch Challenge. The sketch really helped to make this card design.
Being a Birthday themed card I have used the balloon thinlit die and polka dot image from "Celebrate Today" stamp set. I have white heat embossed the polka dot pattern on vellum. I then wanted to carry this pattern of circles through but in an artsy way. I've seen so many examples on Pinterest with Bokeh and looks so beautiful that I wanted to give it a go.
Japanese: [boke] is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Bokeh has been defined as "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light".
The base layer has been watercoloured (ink wash) with Melon Mambo and Daffodil Delight till the right soft haze was achieved leaving a few dark areas for accents on watercolour paper. I then made a stencil using the circle framelits in varying sizes on acetate/window sheet to create the circles for the bokeh effect. I used Stampin' Up! Whisper White pigment ink to apply the circles.
To create the bokeh effect use varying intensity when inking the circles. Start with the biggest circle and sponge the pigment ink very lightly so it's transparent. As the circles get smaller you then progressively add more ink to get the intensity. Always work with odd numbers as it's more pleasing and seems more random. It's good to overlap them and place them randomly too to create the bokeh effect. The smaller circles have been done using the sponge dauber with the most ink applied. Just leave it to dry as pigment ink takes a while to dry, otherwise you'll end up smudging it.
The colour theme for this card was pink and used the blushing bride glimmer paper for the 1. I used the Number of Years bundle to create the 1 thinlit die cut and the sentiment "Look Who's Turning". Silver sequins was added for additional highlights. Inside the card I primarily used the Celebrate Today balloons and images to create a pleasing layout of balloons. One balloon is left blank to write a personal message.
